I have partnered for this project with Ravenna trained mosaicist Samantha Holmes with whom I also worked on the mosaic of the Immaculate Conception in the chapel of the Franciscan University in Loretto PA.
The first step in the process of translating the painted image to mosaic is picking the colors of the glass tesserae (by now we have ordered and received them from Italy so we are ready to go). Here is me in my studio with piles of colored tesserae laid out on the work table.
Here we have created a color board of all the colors we need for each part of the image...
...and sample boards for how to realize the background for the golden section of the mosaic and the progression from grass to sky in the David mosaic.
